Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
