Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
