A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
